Danionella cerebrum generate communication sounds exceeding 140 dB in amplitude. How can such a tiny fish generate such an earsplitting sound? Verity and team discovered the fascinating sound production mechanism and described it in Cook et al, PNAS 2024.

We did not anticipate the amount of media attention, which Verity handled extremely well. It was also very interesting for all of us to observe how a news story changes over time and to witness a wide spectrum in the depth of coverage. There were news articles (BBC, CNN, The Guardian, Süddeutsche, Элементы, National Geographic, Spiegel), videos (BBC, Hunan TV, CBS Kids News) and audio features (NPR morning radio, PNAS Science Sessions, SWR2 Impuls, Radio France), tabloid interpretations (BILD) and a feature in a celebrity gossip magazine right next to news about Nicole Kidman (thanks to our anonymous friend who found it at the local hairdresser!).
